FEMA on YouTube

FEMA just launched a YouTube page at www.youtube.com/fema with videos highlighting disaster operations and assistance programs.  May be something good to post to your website.  Embedding in WebEOC doesn’t work right now but you can add a link in the link plug-in.

Road to Ready internet radio Show this Friday Sept 19 is about Public Outreach and Education

Email from Rick Tobin about Road to Ready Internet radio show. San Diego County uses WebEOC and was actively used during the fires.  See previous post http://pdstx.com/blog/?p=24.

Dear Listeners:

Please join me this Friday, September 19, at 12:00 Noon Pacific, 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, for the weekly Road to Ready Internet radio show.  This show will be about public outreach and education.  The efforts to raise first awareness and then understanding of the various stakeholders, including the public, is now a basic foundation for ensuring proper implementation of policies during disasters—especially individual actions to take appropriate steps before, during, and after emergencies and disaster events.

We’re going to visit with Yvette Urrea Moe, the Public Information Specialist for the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services. Yvette will discuss the new public outreach program to prepare San Diego County residents for the end of this year’s fire season. California has already experienced the most expensive fire season in its modern history.  What lies ahead is October, historically the very worst period for fires each year in California.

As always, listening to the show is free.  All you need is your computer, internet access, a broadband connection, and some speakers or headphones.

You can get access to the show at: www.ricktobin.com/roadtoready/
Simply click on the logo for the show (the family facing the sunrise).  Remember, if you visit before the show’s air time you may be listening to the show that precedes mine. The Road to Ready actually starts about 2 minutes after the hour.

We had a great show last week on School Emergency Preparedness, with our guests Kay Karr of Responsive Learning.  The entire show can be downloaded at www.ricktobin.com/roadtoready/
Just click on the archives of the past shows and load Show 21 for September 12th.

Mobile Emergency Telecommunications Lab (METL)

Just a quick note.

The R&D side of the Man Portable Interoperable Tactical Operations Center (MITOC) is Mark Gardner from Murray State University in Kentucky.  He is currently manning the Mobile Emergency Telecommunications Lab (METL).

Check out his blog at http://murraystatemetl.blogspot.com/.  He is doing some really great things out there with the mobile version of the MITOC.  If you are interested in reading more about the hurricane relief efforts in Beaumont visit his blog above.

Mark also setup a dash cam with a video uplink via cell card.  You can see the video feed below. Its pretty cool.

Use of Internet Based Cameras for Tim McGraw Concert at Fort Sam Houston

Last week, PDS worked with Fort Sam Houston installing and maintaining wireless cameras for a Tim McGraw benefit concert.  See www.pdstx.com/indigo for the cameras we used.

The camera provided gave very high resolution images in both day and night conditions.  The camera sat 30 feet in the air and gave a full 360 degree view of the concert area.  The camera was located 200+ yards away from the stage and could zoom in enough to see Tim McGraw singing, even with all the stage lighting (no whiteout conditions).  I was even more impressed when I could zoom 500 yards out and see troop movements on the other side of the parade grounds at 10 pm with low light conditions.

All the cameras deployed had Bellaire wireless units attached to them and were placed on a 30 foot light stand, the type you use for construction sites, in order to get the best view and the accessible generator power.

Call me if you would like to rent one or two camera systems for your next event.  We are offering discount pricing for any deployments between now and October 15.

Pictures of the camera deployment are below.

Adding Hurricane Ike to WebEOC Boards

I found this morning the hurricane track for Ike image I posted yesterday is automatically updated from the National Weather Service website.  Because this is automatically updated you can place an automatically updated hurricane track image in your WebEOC boards.  The image is relatively large so you should probably dedicate the image to its own board.

Add this image script to your WebEOC board to see Hurricane Ike’s track and have it automatically updated.  You can do this in the script side or the board editor side.  If it is in the board editor just copy and paste the text directly into a cell and click apply.

<p align=”center”><b><font size=”4″ color=”#ffffff”><a title=”" href=”http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/graphics_at4.shtml?5day#contents” target=”window2″ type=”"><img src=”http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT09/refresh/AL0908W5_sm2+gif/092814W_sm.gif” align=”center” /></a></font></b></p>

One thing to note, once Ike disappears the image will no longer work.  If you want to use this feature for future hurricanes do the following steps.

1) Copy this script and keep it for future reference.
2) Go to the NWS website and find the image you want to have updated.
3) Right click on the image and select copy image location.
4) Paste url of image location where it says img src=”URL” in the script above.
5) If you want users to see a specific page when they click on the image copy the url location of the page and add it where it says href=”URL”

That should be it.  Shot me an email at info@pdstx.com if this doesn’t work for you.

Also, I am in San Antonio and am expecting a pretty rough weekend since SA is projected to be in the Northeast quadrant of a potential cat 4 storm.  So you may not hear from me in the next couple of days.

If you are in the path of this hurricane, good luck.  My prayers are with you.

Brian

Ike On Its Way Now

Looks like Ike is on its way now. At least New Orleans will be missed but it may hit between Houston and Corpus Christi instead. Man, if it isn’t one hurricane its another.

This NOAA site updates the hurricane track pretty regularly. I will keep posting info about Ike as it gets closer.

Road to Ready Show this Friday Sept 5 is About Disaster Intelligence

I received this information from Rick Tobin about his Road to Readiness Internet radio show. I receive this information from Rick on a weekly basis and will try to post his notices here for others to listen in.

Dear Listeners:

Please join me this Friday, September 5, at 12:00 Noon Pacific, 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, for the weekly Road to Ready Internet radio show. This week’s show will be about Disaster Intelligence. We’ll explore the basis for sound intelligence gathering and how to use it properly. There needs to be more time spent on critical thinking skills during emergencies so sound decisions are made instead of knee jerk reactions. Our special guests will be Professor Jeannette Sutton and Assistant Professor Leysia Palen from the University of Colorado, at Boulder. They have helped collect and document information about ad hoc networks of communications used by the public during recent disasters. These information sharing networks were outside the typical paths of communication used in emergency management for public information. Don’t miss this interview.

This week you can now call the show during the guest appearance and ask questions directly to the guest. The numbers to call are:

TOLL FREE-US & CANADA …………….866-472-5788…………….

LOCAL IN SAN DIEGO AREA …………….858-836-0103……………

We had a great show last week on Office Readiness, with Betty Kildow. The entire show can be downloaded at www.ricktobin.com/roadtoready/
