Road to Ready This Friday is All About Rabies
Notice from Rick Tobin about the Road to Ready show tomorrow.
- Brian
Dear Friends and Colleagues:
Please join me this Friday, Oct 24, at 12:00 Noon Pacific, 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, for the weekly Road to Ready Internet radio show. This show will be about rabies—that’s right, rabies!
Rabies was once one of the most feared diseases in the United States. Unfortunately it is still a fearsome killer in other parts of the world. It has also had a disturbing resurgence in the United States within feral pet populations and other native animals that are coming into contact with the public, as human developments push further and further into the wild land interface areas. Our special guest will be Dr. Ben Sun, the State Public Health Veterinarian with the California Department of Public Health and responsible for the statewide rabies prevention and control programs. You may think you know a lot about rabies, but you may be surprised what you don’t know about the latest types of treatments available to those bitten or infected through other means. Please join me for a fascinating voyage as we look at an old denizen.
You can get access to the show at: www.ricktobin.com/roadtoready/
Simply click on the logo for the show (the family facing the sunrise).
We had a great show last week on Vaccines and Vaccination, with our guest Dr. Merry Holliday-Hanson, who had plenty of valuable ideas and insights to share. The entire show can be downloaded at www.ricktobin.com/roadtoready/
Just click on the archives of the past shows and load Show 26 for October 17th. The vaccine topic is always very controversial and the show explored some of the perspectives, both for and against.
I look forward to seeing you Friday on the Road to Ready.
Sincerely,
Rick Tobin, Your Host

Using Google Maps and Google Earth for EOC Use
I came across this article (Attention, Google Maps Fans: Here come GeoEye photos) about higher resolution maps coming for Google Maps and Google Earth and thought I would add some comments about using Google Earth in your EOC.
First, WebEOC has a free mapping program called WebEOC Mapper Lite found here. This program will allow you to map the location of an address in WebEOC using Yahoo Maps. The paid version is WebEOC Mapper and can be found here. WebEOC Mapper has custom GIS maps built from ArcGIS, plume modeling from the EPA, allows importing data feeds, and has common DHS symbology.
If these two options are not available for your agency or you do not have WebEOC yet, I would recommend using Google Earth for mapping incident locations in your EOC (http://earth.google.com/).
It is a free program from Google that allows you to see geographically any location in the world, get 3D images of buildings, place points on a map, and see points of interest other users have highlighted. In addition users can also see buildings at street level, view satellite imagery, and other cool features.
Google Earth is especially helpful for keeping track of all the incidents an EOC intakes and will allow you to replay those incident locations. I saw this feature used in a state agency EOC over the summer and it really showed where the greatest number of their incidents were coming from (West Texas), when, and how many pieces of equipment were needed in those areas.
You can also share incident points with other Google Earth users by
creating a layer that is specific to your EOC. Then download Google
Earth on all your EOC computers, add the shared layer from the
Internet, and give everyone in the EOC access to view that shared
layer. Steps to share locations through network, over the Internet,
and via email are located here.
Google Earth is free but you can also purchase Google Earth Pro for $400.

I received this YouTube video from Xplane explaining how our current economy problems came around. It explains things really well and wanted to pass it along to those out there in the WebEOC and Homeland Security world.

WebEOC Jobs
With the economy in so much disarray right now I thought it may help those of you out there in the WebEOC world to know about WebEOC jobs that are available.
I receive WebEOC job notices on a daily basis and thought the information I receive may be beneficial for someone out there reading this blog. So, when a job comes up that I can tell is still open I will post it here for those interested. I will not take down the old job postings so click on those at your discretion.
Here are a couple to get you started.

FEMA on YouTube
FEMA just launched a YouTube page at www.youtube.com/fema with videos highlighting disaster operations and assistance programs. May be something good to post to your website. Embedding in WebEOC doesn’t work right now but you can add a link in the link plug-in.
